ICF Global Conference in London – 10/6/12 – last day
This morning, the last day of the conference, Camila Batmanghelidjh. Enlightened us about the violent and ignored “vermin” children, chronically abused now living violent lives on the streets of London. She founded “Kids Company” to provide practical, emotional, and educational support. Their development has been arrested; they are calmed only by violence, not knowing or receiving love. The child remembers the repeated assault they experience from the time they are 4 or 5 years old, when they are unable to defend themselves or revenge the perpetrator. They memorize the hatred which later erupts as violence. Over the last two years neuroscientists in Cambridge, UCL, Oxford, Duke and Harvard have been studying the brains of these children. Not yet published, Camila was unable to share details, but did report that the children are unable to judge the emotion on faces – neutral expressions were interpreted as dangerous and threatening – requiring violent defense. She is fighting this international betrayal of children.
Joan King’s life path embodies the blending of the hard and noetic sciences. At the tender age of seventeen, she stepped into life at the Dominican convent in her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. Eleven years later she left that religious training to become a chemist, and then received a Ph.D. in neuroscience and psychology. Her twenty-year tenure as a professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, lead her to a dynamic crossroads of personal self-discovery. She left academia. Her new found "inner knowing" ignited the writing of her first book. It became the foundation in understanding how our bodies model the teachings of our beliefs. Joan King’s blending of science and spirituality birthed her professional coaching business, Beyond-Success LLC, in 1998.
